Wake

  • Wake Vicki Smith et al (Te Moana Nui a Kiwa/Aotearoa/NZ) In researching the Wake project Vicki will engage an interdisciplinary community, at the confluence of her individual investigation and creative speculation about ocean exploration and its environmental and cultural impacts and artefacts. The development of the cyberformance will draw disparate communities into an intermedial space where they can give voice to memories and their own practice within the realm of Pacific navigation.
  • Aotearoa/New Zealand is a long thin cloud sitting on the horizon of Te Moana Nui a Kiwa [the Pacific Ocean] between latitude 41º South and longitude 171º East. The group of islands lie between the Tropic of Capricorn and the Antarctic Ocean a temperate location extremely influenced by the sea all around. They nestle against the dateline and being at the extreme east of the Prime Meridian are ‘first to see the sun.’

My 101010 work ‘x marks the spot’ explored themes of navigation and location in both the physical and digital sense. Initially to be contrasting two voyagers journeys it became a personal mono/log. While journeying through the Pacific I considered how we are traversing this planet compared to the early passage-makers. The work investigated how we view and use the environment we encounter and what symbols and measures we use to record our transit. It explored how early voyagers have encountered cultures and what processes they have deployed in order to recreate these stories for those at home.

A prologue for the work Wake will be performed as the show String Games at the 11:11:11 Festival of Cyberformance in UpStage. Navigate to the mahara page for more details about the gallery set-up and further details and background for Wake
