The current issue of the Portuguese online magazine for art, culture and technology has a focus on netactivism, and includes an article by Helen Varley Jamieson titled Networked Conversations as Activism. She reflects on the social and political impact of mainstream online activism (petitions, social media shares, etc.) compared with small-scale grass-roots projects that engage participants in meaningful conversations and creative problem-solving. The projects make-shift (2010-12) and We have a situation! (ongoing since 2013) offer examples of how creative uses of digital technologies can create new participatory spaces for critical thinking and active civic engagement.
