On 29 March, Helen Varley Jamieson and Paula Crutchlow used UpStage and Skype in their performative presentation “Are You There?” at the Performing Presence conference, University of Exeter. Paula was on-site at the conference and Helen appeared from New Zealand. “Are you there?” begins a conversation about presence between two friends on opposite sides of the world. Using Skype and the cyberformance platform UpStage, their dialogue is a remembering of shared real time/space, an enactment of mediated relationship and a discussion of remote presence as a powerful and contested theatrical device.
