Building up to 101010 …

August 18th, 2010

It’s now less than two months before the 101010 UpStage Festival and everyone is working hard behind the scenes. Artists around the world are crafting graphics and audio, and rehearsing their shows. The RL access nodes are starting to promote the event to their local networks. We are still confirming nodes, so if you’d like to host one, please email info@upstage.org.nz.

We’re also looking for people to help with documenting the festival. This requires being able to screen-record the performances, save files to a standard format and upload them to a server. If you can help us with this, please email info@upstage.org.nz.

Looking forward to another exciting cyberformance marathon at 101010!

There will be an open walk-through in UpStage on Tuesday 13 July, at 10am UK time (find your local time here).

The open walk-through is an opportunity for newcomers to learn the basic operations of UpStage and how to create live online performances in this platform. It’s also a chance for regular UpStage users to meet, chat and jam. The walk-through lasts between one & two hours & is a fun, informal way to get a feel for the medium.

if you would like to participate, please email info@upstage.org.nz requesting a guest log-in.

Over the last couple years, a group in Vancouver (who let audiences create animated drawings on stage in Lines in 090909) has been experimenting with UpStage avatars to see what we could discover about the limits of the technical flexibility of this platform. Suffice it to say, there’s a lot more you can do with Upstage than we usually think. Below is a list of some of the things that we’ve learned along the way that may be useful to others.

Several of these tips assume a certain amount of knowledge of Flash or ActionScript code, so be warned … there’s technical information ahead.
